Debra Sugerman | Transitions

: September 1, 2010 through October 2, 2010 :

statement

After a six-year break in exhibiting, I have returned with images that are about transitory moments in life, both recent and further back in the past.

Like the rest of the world, my own life has had many transitory moments. This year has proven to be a veritable roller coaster, with the only constant being change: one transition after another...

These images from the past year{s} are about moving in and out of transition, passage, environment, beauty and memory, love, sorrow and impermanence. They reflect the transitory nature of all things and places.

Transition:

n 1: the act of passing from one state or place to the next [syn: passage]

2: an event that results in a transformation [syn: conversion, changeover]

3: a change from one place or state or subject or stage to another

4: a passage that connects a topic to one that follows

biography

Debra Sugerman grew up in San Antonio Texas. She ran away from the sleepy little town as fast as she could around the 18th year of her life. Promising her parents she would never ever live her again… she has discovered she lied. Debra has returned to settle and live in San Antonio, much to the chagrin of many, including herself.

She began her art career at the young age of 12 when her ‘Uncle’ Lew stole a pastel piece her mother proudly displayed in the kitchen of their house. Yes he left a dollar, but she felt like it was thievery in the end. Now she can say she was in his permanent collection at a young age. From the tiny age of 6, Debra was convinced she would become a comic artist, stand-up comedian and on the Ed Sullivan show. Ed died. Then Debra discovered she had profound stage fright. Drawing led to photography at age 12; the seductive smell of fix and developer became a part of Debra’s young life.

Blessed with being prolific and a too-long career at a ‘few’ colleges, she found her niche in exhibition, reportage and small magazine jobs. She is widely collected by many a private collection both near and far to San Antonio. Her visual inspirations are many: painting, moving imagery, the work of Diane Arbus, have all greatly influenced Debra’s inner mind in creating imagery.
